York City winger Connor Smith admits his first senior goal was certainly long overdue.

The 21-year-old who joined the Minstermen from Hartlepool United last summer, finally broke his goalscoring duck when claiming an important second-half equaliser against Chorley at the weekend.

In fairness the Stockton-born forward has started only a couple of his seventeen games since arriving at Bootham Crescent in June. That’s despite many supporters believing that both he and midfielder Theo Wharton have been too regularly underused and are probably deserving of an extended opportunity in the first-team.

Prior to York, there were also nineteen scoreless appearances in his four years at former club Hartlepool.

“That first goal in professional football has been a long time coming,” Smith conceded to The Press. “I’ve had shots in the past, but they’ve not quite gone for me, so it was great to finally get a goal that actually means something to people.

“Sometimes, I’ve come on and done OK, but goals get you noticed and, hopefully, I’ve put myself in a better position than before in terms of starting the next match,” he added. “As an attack-minded player, goals are everything. You can create opportunities and put balls in the right areas, but the best way of getting your name out there is by scoring.”
