Sheffield-born defender Steve Senior joined the Minstermen as an apprentice in 1979. He immediately began to make progress and signed a professional deal with the club on his eighteenth birthday, by when he had already made his senior debut.
However, it was in season 1983-84 when he established himself as first-choice at right-back, and was a virtual ever-present as his side romped to the Fourth Division title until unfortunately breaking his leg at Aldershot in April 1984.
He soon fought his way back and reclaimed his place from his major rival Chris Evans the following season, and went on to play his part in two tremendous FA Cup runs in 1984-85 and 1985-86 that brought a fabulous victory over Arsenal and a couple of memorable draws against Liverpool.
Always a solid, reliable and tough-tackling defender, Senior was a regular fixture in the side in his last four seasons at Bootham Crescent before joining Northampton Town for £15,000 in May 1987. But he remained there only a few months until leaving for Wigan Athletic and then Preston North End three years later.
