York City have appointed Tamworth’s Gary Mills as their new manager. He will be joined at Bootham Crescent by his current assistant Darron Gee.

“We appointed Gary because of his considerable football knowledge and his enthusiasm and drive is a manager to replicate his successful playing career” – York chairman Jason McGill

The 48-year-old is a former European Cup winner with Nottingham Forest under the legendary Brian Clough, and successfully steered the Lambs to promotion from Blue Square Bet North as champions in 2009.

Mills started his managerial career at Grantham Town fourteen years ago before subsequent spells in charge of Kings Lynn, Notts County, Alfreton Town and Tamworth (twice). He also had a couple of years as first-team coach at Coventry City.

After winning a European Cup winners’ medal as a teenager with Forest in 1980, he had subsequent playing spells at Seattle Sounders, Derby County, Notts County and Leicester City before moving into non-league.

Northampton-born Mills will be joined at Bootham Crescent by his right-hand man of thirteen years Darron Gee, also 48-years-old and a former player with Hucknall Town.

“We are very pleased to welcome Gary Mills to York City Football Club. Gary is a highly regarded manager and has extensive experience of Conference football and knows what is required to succeed in this league,” York chairman Jason McGill told the club’s official website.

“We appointed Gary because of his considerable football knowledge and his enthusiasm and drive as a manager to replicate his successful playing career,” he continued. “We are also pleased to welcome assistant manager, Darron Gee to the Club. Gary and Darron have a great working relationship and Darron will be assisting with coaching and scouting duties. They are a strong team who will help us to achieve the playing success we all desire.

“On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank our supporters for their patience during the managerial appointment process,” McGill added. “We did not want to rush into a hasty, panic appointment following the surprise departure of Martin Foyle and were keen to find the right manager to take us forward.”
