Sporting Director Dave Penney expects at least a couple of injured players to be returning for York City’s crucial weekend visit to Gainsborough Trinity.

Having suffered a truly dismal 1-0 defeat at Nuneaton Town just a couple of days ago, the Minstermen can afford no further slip-ups as they travel to face relegation-threatened opponents on Saturday.

That could witness both young striker Alex Kempster and former skipper Simon Heslop returning to their starting line-up following knocks.

“Young Alex Kempster’s trained today, so that’s good news,” Penney told BBC Radio York. “He’s a bit of the physical presence that we’ve been lacking up the top. And he’s a good player and fresh and hungry. He’s trained today so hopefully he comes through that okay.

“Simon Heslop’s back training,,” he added. “So he’s another body that’s coming back and that just gives a bit of the freshness that wasn’t there on Tuesday.”

But York are still awaiting for news from Middlesbrough regarding on loan Alex Pattison, who may yet similarly be available following ankle trouble.

Meanwhile, Penney acknowledges the significance of the next few days, in which City’s fate could virtually be decided with a trip to FC United of Manchester next Tuesday.

“It’s a massive week for us,” he admitted. “If we want to extend the season into May, then we’ve got to pick some points up. Saturday is a massive game for us and we need to try and get three points and get some momentum.”
