Gary Mills labelled his side’s defending as “disgraceful” in the wake of their embarrassing four-goal collapse at lowly Southport.
“We haven`t got where we are by conceding goals like that and I`m raging about the performance to be honest” – Gary Mills |
The Minstermen had a player sent-off during the early exchanges for the second successive away game when central defender David McGurk was dismissed after only a minute. Chris Lever converted the subsequent penalty and the visitors never recovered as more poor defending saw them concede three more goals to the relegation strugglers.
“We haven`t got where we are by conceding goals like that and I`m raging about the performance to be honest. There`s got to be a desire to stop people scoring goals,” Mills told The Press. “Even with ten men, you can still come back from 1-0 down at Southport and get a draw or a win, so to lose the game after 21 minutes when we were 3-0 behind is disappointing.
“Even then, you think maybe we can get back into it if we get a quick goal after the break but my skipper [Chris Smith] made a bad decision and gave them an early goal instead. He knows that and I know that,” he added. “You can`t allow free headers and free shots on goal in your 18-yard box and you can`t get much more basic than that.”
York will need to sort out their defensive problems quickly as current Blue Square Premier leaders AFC Wimbledon visit Bootham Crescent on Tuesday evening.
