York City Ladies began their season in style with a resounding 7-0 victory against Cramlington United in the FA Cup first qualifying round.

Midfielder Becca Dawson helped herself to an opening day hat-trick and new striker Nat Eustance scored twice on her debut. Winger Jazz Whitwell and right-back Josie Hewson were similarly on target for the hosts. Dawson was unsurprisingly named player of the game.

The Minsterbelles therefore surpassed their scoreline at the corresponding stage of the competition last season with five second-half goals at the expense of their Northumberland County League visitors.

Kayleigh Davis’ side also have north-east opposition in the next round in a fortnight’s time when travelling to divisional rivals Whitley Bay, who themselves struck nine goals without reply past Rutherford Ravens.

There were also some big scores on the opening weekend of league football, with Barnsley netting eight times against a scoreless Scunthorpe & Bottesford, while newcomers Boldon thrashed Castleford White Rose 6-0 and Hessle Town won 5-1 at Tynedale.

Elsewhere, York City Ladies Reserves were defeated 4-2 at Birtley BYPC in their first game since promotion at the end of last season. Samantha Terry scored twice for the visitors during the second-half. Newcomer Gemma Croft was their player of the game.
