Former York City midfielder Neal Bishop was left celebrating his ‘greatest-ever’ goal after giving Notts County a shock lead against Manchester City in their FA Cup fourth round tie at Meadow Lane.
“I can’t describe the feeling when I scored, it was amazing. It’s the best goal I have ever scored” – Neal Bishop |
The Magpies were only denied a famous victory by recent £27m signing Edin Dzeko’s late equaliser and now face a replay at the City of Manchester Stadium.
Bishop had earlier sent the home crowd wild with a flashing near post header past England goalkeeper Joe Hart from Alan Gow’s inswinging corner.
“I can’t describe the feeling when I scored, it was amazing. It’s the best goal I have ever scored,” Bishop told the Nottingham Evening Post. “It was a good ball in from Gow and it’s a routine we’ve worked on in training under the new gaffer. It was my job to get across to the front post. Thankfully the ball landed on my head and it dropped inside the far post.”
Bishop’s goal was his first in almost twelve months and certainly a moment he will never forget, although it was still tinged with a little regret.
“We’re disappointed we didn’t hold out for the win,” he added. “If we had won 1-0 no-one could have questioned that we deserved it. It’s just a shame we couldn’t do it and win the tie.
“As soon as I scored I looked at the clock and there was over half an hour left. I scored a bit too early! I never dared to think we were going to do it.”
