York City boss Martin Foyle was quick to back goalkeeper Michael Ingham after his late slip gifted bottom club Grays Athletic a point at the weekend.

The Minstermen appeared set for a fourth successive home victory until the former Northern Ireland international produced a weak attempted punched clearance that allowed Duran Reynolds to snatch a last-minute equaliser for ten-man Grays Athletic.

The visitors had earlier had goalkeeper Glyn Garner sent-off, but Richard Brodie’s subsequent penalty was saved by his deputy Preston Edwards.

And despite Brodie later going on to register his 33rd goal of the campaign, Ingham’s late error ultimately cost the hosts two points and a fall of one place in the table to fifth.

It completed a mixed afternoon for the ex-Sunderland keeper, who had been named as ‘Clubman of the Year’ prior to kick-off, ahead of top scorer Brodie and left-back James Meredith.

“Inghy could have done better but it`s probably his first mistake for a while and he`s been fantastic for me so I can have no complaints about him,” Foyle told The Press. “I would rather he made half an error now than in the play-offs.

“We also didn`t react to the second ball and, even though it was a good finish by their lad on the volley, we never covered as you should behind your `keeper when he comes for a cross.”

Vital View: Is Michael Ingham still the best York keeper since another former ‘Clubman of the Year’ Alan Fettis?
