York City manager Martin Foyle has spoken of the “guts” shown by Richard Brodie to convert the dramatic injury-time penalty against Altrincham.

Leading scorer Brodie shook-off memories of his recent miss from the spot against Mansfield to crash home a winner for the Minstermen deep into added time at Bootham Crescent.

That raised his overall tally for the season to twenty-seven and left his side on the very edge of securing their place in the end-of-season play-offs.

Only AFC Wimbledon would now appear to have a realistic chance of denying York a second play-off appearance in four years. The Dons are currently ten points behind Martin Foyle’s side with only five games remaining. However, they do visit York for a real ‘six-pointer’ tomorrow night.

“I thought Brodes was back on song last week and he created a few decent openings for himself again (against Altrincham),” Foyle told The Press

“I told Paul Harsley to speak to him if we got another penalty and that, if he felt confident, to let him have it. People might say he`s nervous but he showed a lot of guts to take that penalty with two points riding on it after having his last one saved.”

While praising the supporters, Foyle also called for them to stay with his team right through until the end of the season.

“I know Rushden`s crowd are getting on their backs and I don`t want our fans to go that way,” he added.

“We need everybody singing from the same hymn sheet. It will be a massive game tomorrow night and, hopefully, well-supported.”

Vital View: Brodie might be a ‘big daft lad,’ but is he already becoming a City legend?
