York City stalwart David McGurk is thrilled to be facing his boyhood team Middlesbrough in a special testimonial game in early August.

The Teessiders have agreed to provide strong opposition in recognition of the trusty 29-year-old’s eight seasons of tremendous service at Bootham Cresent on Saturday 4th August.
Middlesbrough-born McGurk has made over 250 senior appearances for the Minstermen since arriving on a permanent deal from Darlington six years ago, following on from three separate successful loan spells.
“I’m delighted they will be coming for my benefit game,” McGurk told The Press. “There might have been opportunities to get a team who would probably bring more fans but, being from the area and growing up supporting them, makes it more special.
“I’ll have a load of family and friends coming down,” he added. “My aunty started taking me to Ayresome Park when I was young before the move to the Riverside where I went with my parents and mates.”
The Boro game is one of three events already organised for McGurk’s benefit year. A golf day is being staged at Forest Park Golf Club on Wednesday 29th August while a benefit dinner has been arranged for the Royal York Hotel on 25th October.
