York City boss Martin Foyle was making no excuses after his side fell to their first defeat in eight games following a very poor performance at Eastbourne Borough.

A disastrous opening half for the visitors found them trailing 3-0 to their struggling opponents, until Michael Rankine restored a little hope from the penalty spot just before the break.

But that proved the end of the scoring and allowed the hosts to complete a league double and move themselves closer towards safety near the foot of the table.

“Well they certainly looked a lot hungrier than us,” Foyle told BBC Radio York. “The players have had a good rocket there and rightly so.”

The Minstermen slipped back into fifth place as a result of this defeat and Rushden & Diamonds’ expected victory over Ebbsfleet United.

“I thought for the first thirty minutes, we weren’t all over the shop,” he continued. “But we certainly didn’t put our foot in, we didn’t track runners, we didn’t win tackles, we didn’t win headers.

“Their front two bullied our two centre-halves. To be honest there wasn’t many pluses in that first thirty minutes.

“But then after that we scored the penalty, and there was a blatant penalty on the next one two minutes after that, but the referee didn’t give it,” added Foyle.

“Second-half we just huffed and puffed and I thought we were just snatching at shots. There wasn’t any real quality and to start a game of football like that was very disappointing.”
