York City will return to Wembley for the play-off final on Sunday 16th May after a magnificent performance at Kenilworth Road saw them beat favourites Luton Town 1-0.

Defending a 1-0 advantage from the first-leg, wonderful York produced a superb display of resourcefulness and courage to restrict highly-fancied Luton to limited opportunities.

Indeed so good defensively were the visitors that their goalkeeper Michael Ingham only had one serious save to make from Kevin Gallen midway through the first-half.

Two minutes into the second period the Minstermen struck a decisive blow when a trip on Chris Carruthers gave them a free-kick on the edge of their opponents’ area.

Home keeper Mark Tyler could then only block Michael Rankine’s fierce strike and Carruthers followed up to score.

The Hatters had defender Adam Newton sent-off in the closing moments as the gallant visitors held firm to record an aggregate 2-0 victory.

But the contest ended in chaos as York’s heroic players were attacked by home supporters at the final whistle.

The Minstermen will take on Oxford United in the final in just under a fortnight’s time.
