York City’s play-off semi-final second-leg with Luton Town ended in chaos after the visitors’ celebrating players were attacked by home supporters at the final whistle.

The Minstermen had earlier recorded a tremendous 1-0 victory on the day and a 2-0 aggregate triumph courtesy of Chris Carruthers’ goal two minutes after the break.

But the contest ended in uproar as York’s jubilant players celebrated in front of their 1,400 delighted travelling fans at the final whistle.

However, those same players were swiftly forced to retreat into the stands after coming under attack from Luton supporters as they advanced towards them.

Missiles were thrown at York players with their star striker Richard Brodie getting struck on the head by a coin.

Luton chairman Nick Owen told SkySports News: “The fans swarmed towards the York end, where the York players were celebrating with their fans, and it obviously wound up a certain number of our fans, and it led to fairly bitter verbal confrontations.

“Things were obviously being thrown, which is absolutely dreadful and most of our fans would not condone it,” he continued. “I’d never condemn our fans en bloc because our fans are absolutely magnificent, but one or two of them have let the club down and we`re very upset about and pretty angry, really.

“I’m surprised, really, that they weren`t able to deal with it and for a while it looked very ugly indeed, but it did calm down. I’m hoping nobody`s been hurt and nobody`s been arrested.”
