Proud moment for young striker

Seventeen-year-old Flynn McNaughton is hoping to continue playing in front of ‘noisy and surreal’ crowds following his recent first-team debut for York City.

The young striker was brought off the bench, in the process becoming the 1,000th player used during City’s proud 96-year history, and helped spark a second-half recovery in their weekend 1-1 draw with play-off rivals Chorley.

McNaughton, whose father Michael is a former Scarborough defender, has already shown plenty of promise while representing both the youth-team and reserves this season.

And with three front-line strikers currently ruled out of action due to injury, the teenage goalscoring prospect could once again be included for the weekend arrival of neighbours Harrogate Town to Bootham Crescent.

“I’d played in North Riding Cup matches before in front of a few hundred people,” McNaughton told The Scarborough News. “But this was a much better atmosphere and the noise of the crowd really gives you a buzz and makes you want to perform for them, it was surreal really.

“It felt really good to come on and was nerve-racking at the time, but once I got out there I felt quite comfortable and the fans really got behind me which helped a lot, it was a proud moment.”
