York City striker George Purcell has signed for Dover Athletic for an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old agreed a two-year deal and is seen as a potential replacement for Dover’s 45-goal leading scorer Adam Birchall following his recent move to Gillingham.

Purcell originally joined York from Braintree Town last summer but experienced a difficult season after suffering an early ankle injury. He eventually finished the campaign on loan at relegated Eastbourne Borough after an earlier spell at Dartford.

The former Ebbsfleet United marksman still had a year remaining on his current deal at Bootham Crescent but manager Gary Mills had always said he wouldn’t stand in his way if a suitable offer was received.
