Striker Jon Parkin admitted to feeling absolutely devastated after suffering a first career relegation with York City – but would ideally still like to remain at Bootham Crescent.

The veteran front-man scored twice against former club Forest Green Rovers to increase his personal tally to fifteen goals since returning to the club in November.

But those weren’t enough as the Minstermen’s final game draw failed to save them from relegation despite twice coming from behind.

“Devastated. Obviously we’ve got a draw and at ninety minutes in the other [Guiseley] game that was enough,” Parkin told BBC Radio York. “It’s just the small margins that’s ultimately cost us.

“We’ve had three or four really good chances. Their keeper’s pulled three incredible saves off. On another day we win the game three or four-two. We’ve drawn 2-2 and circumstances elsewhere have meant we are where we are.

“It was one of the biggest games of my career, comfortably, and ultimately we’ve fell short,” he continued. “So just obviously massively disappointed. I came to help this club stay in the division and ultimately I’ve failed.

“This football club shouldn’t even be in this league. But it’s alright saying it’s a big football club, but after 46 games you finish where you finish.”

Regarding his own playing future the 35-year-old marksman added: “It was written in my contract that if we stayed up I was here next season. I’d like to say for next season but that’s not a conversation for today.”
