Striker Gary Martin has pledged to fly back into the country if York City reach Wembley for a second consecutive season.

The 27-year-old former Middlesbrough forward opened his goalscoring account for the current FA Trophy holders during their third qualifying round 3-1 victory over Coalville Town at Bootham Crescent.

However, Martin will be leaving York at the end of next month in order to honour a contract he’s already signed with Norwegian top-flight club Lillestrom.

“I’ll be on the first flight back if we get to Wembley,” he told BBC Radio York. “I think there won’t be an option. Obviously I want them to go up and as far as they can in the Trophy.

“It’s a huge club and when I was growing up as a kid, York City were always League One or League Two,” Martin continued. “To see them this low, it’s not where they should be. You see the fanbase and the pitch and the facilities they have, it’s too big a club to be where they are.

“I think we will go up but we’ve just got to keep working hard. Because of our quality, I think we’re the best team, so it’s just about hard work and attitude really.”
