York City Supporters’ Trust have issued a statement following the football club being put up for sale by chairman Jason McGill.

The Malton businessman is to offer his 75% shareholding to prospective buyers after Trust members decided against releasing their 25% ownership to the major shareholder in return for maintaining financial backing at current levels.

“Following the Trust SGM and subsequent announcement by Jason McGill of his intention to offer JM Packaging’s shares in the football club for sale, the Trust board are considering various options,” read a Trust statement.

“All members, fans, staff, players and the wider community can rest assured that the Trust board will take all necessary steps to protect the future of our football club. It is why we exist.

“Due to the commercial and legal nature of discussions, the Trust will be unable to provide a running commentary on developments as they unfold but will make further announcements when we are able.

“The Trust board would expect and welcome confidential discussions with any party who intends to submit a proposal to acquire the majority shareholding in York City Football Club Ltd. It is in the commercial and strategic interests of all parties that any prospective buyers engage with the Trust at an early stage.

“For the time being, we encourage all fans to focus their energies on supporting the players as we continue the push for promotion.

“Keep the faith.”
