Striker Jon Parkin couldn’t be happier after signing a new deal keeping him at Bootham Crescent until the summer of 2019.

The veteran goalscorer has already matched the sixteen goals he struck for the Minstermen last season, while simultaneously raising his overall career total beyond two-hundred

“I’m really happy,” Parkin told York’s official YouTube channel. “We managed to get everything sorted out pretty quickly and I’m just looking forward to the [Blyth Spartans] game tomorrow now.

“I want to take this club forward,” he announced. “Obviously I said at the end of last season how disappointed I was that we’ve not managed to stay up. Hopefully I can contribute to success here and getting back up the league.”

Despite celebrating his 36th birthday later this month, Parkin never had any considerations of retirement after almost two decades in the professional game.

“Not at all,” he confirmed. “Wherever I feel I can contribute I’ll carry on playing. I know myself and if I’m not contributing I’ll hang my boots up and let the young lads have a game.”

Manager Martin Gray was equally thrilled at latest developments: “It’s fantastic news,” he enthused. “He’s such a big personality and character and such an important player to the football club. Every club he’s been at you’ve got goals from him and this season he’s given us sixteen goals.

“For any centre-forward to get over two-hundred goals in their career they go in the real top bracket of being an outstanding goalscorer. We’re just delighted that he’s committed to the club for another eighteen months.

“There’s so much that we’re looking to build on going forward and Jon is a key part of what we’re trying to do.”
