New midfielder Sean McAllister is ready to make up for lost time after joining York City on a month’s loan.

The experienced 30-year-old arrives at Bootham Crescent having managed only four appearances for parent club Grimsby Town last season due to injury.

“It’s a great opportunity for me to go out and get some games,” McAllister told York’s official YouTube channel. “The past two years I’ve struggled with injury and been misdiagnosed on a problem.

“But finally after a long time, I’ve got to the bottom of it. And the last month I’ve been back training and played a few reserve games at Grimsby. I just need that competitive edge again and it gives me the opportunity to get that time. And hopefully I can help York and start moving up the league.

“I’m more of a defensive central midfielder but I do work hard and like to get about the pitch. I hate giving the ball away and like to think I try and get the best out of my team-mates,” he explained. “I’m a good organiser and talker on the pitch. And most of all I’m a winner. That’s why I’ve had quite a long career in the Football League – because I hate losing.”

Manager Martin Gray added: “It’s a month’s loan to hopefully have a look at each other and get him up to speed. He’s missed a bit of football of late through injury but he’s had two or three reserve games the last two weeks.

“So I think it’s a good opportunity to hopefully bring something to the party regarding his understanding of the game and his use of the ball. And allow the players around him to have that little bit more freedom in their play as well.

“He’s very neat and tidy on the ball and his possession is very good,” he continued. “You don’t see him misplace or lose many balls. He’s very suited to ‘sitting’ and with a defensive mentality. He also allows other players to get on with their roles of playing a more advanced role in the game.”
