York City have decided to incorporate blue shorts into their new kit next season following calls from many of their supporters.

The club had asked fans to make their selection from two available kits featured on their official website, with supporters being asked to text through their chosen option.

However, a number of fans have contacted the club over the absence of the traditional navy blue within the kit, with the two choices being both red and white shirt design accompanied by red shorts.

A statement released on the club’s website said:

“After a number of years of red & white strips, the club returned to red & blue at the start of last season as it was felt that this would be a popular choice with supporters. However, this has caused problems in two areas, the most important one of which has been a feeling amongst the football management and players that the kit has made it difficult for players to identify their team mates, particularly under floodlights.

“Additionally, Conference rules request that dark colours are not used as these can cause clashes with the kit worn by match officials. Eagle eyed fans will have noticed that City have switched their shorts and socks from Blue to Red half way through the current season for the above reasons. In addition to this, although there are Red & Blue kits currently available in the Nike range, none of these are available to the club on a two year deal which would mean changing kits again at the end of next season. This would be unfair on fans as the club are committed to changing their strip every two years to save supporters the expense of buying new shirts every year.

“However, the club have taken Supporters views into consideration and will now be incorporating a set of blue shorts into the fans choice of kit for the next two seasons.”
