A third successive defeat for managerless York City as their alarming slide continued against a confident and free-scoring Newport County.
Woeful defensive work inside the first half-hour saw the visitors twice concede as Sam Foley took advantage of their generosity. Leading scorer Craig Reid then added a brace after the interval to complete an easy victory.
Caretaker manager Steve Torpey earlier made one change with Danny Racchi being recalled in midfield at the expense of Peter Till.
But it took the visitors only six minutes to fall behind when they conceded in all too familiar circumstances after Darryl Knights’ cross from the right was headed in unopposed at the far post by Foley.
Danger man Reid then struck the crossbar before the home side extended their lead when the York defence again went missing just before the half-hour. This time Foley was allowed to curl his finish beyond the fingertips of Michael Ingham from the edge of the area.
Goalscorer Foley soon went close to his hat-trick when heading a Reid cross over, while Leon Constantine shot weakly at Glyn Garner and Danny Racchi also drove wide in reply. Danny Parslow then hoisted an effort over just before the break.
The Minstermen made changes after the interval, but it was more of the same just beyond the hour as Greg Young was penalised after failing to clear, with Reid eventually seizing on a loose ball inside the area and netting his tenth goal of the season from the subsequent free-kick.
And Newport added their fourth eight minutes later when Reid turned and chipped over Ingham and into the top corner.
York substitute Michael Gash later had a header blocked before fellow replacement David Dowson blasted against the right-hand upright just before the end.
