Former skipper Simon Heslop has been included in the York City squad travelling down to AFC Telford United on Tuesday evening.

The Minstermen are chasing a fifth successive victory and would move as high as fourth in the table should they achieve it.

Midfielder Heslop, 30, hasn’t actually featured in the first-team since the end of October and recently spent a month on loan to National League club Eastleigh.

“Everybody’s trained today and is fine,” assistant manager Dave Penney told BBC Radio York. “Hessie’s trained today, so he’s fine and will come into the squad.

“He’ll make us stronger, no doubt about it in my mind,” he insisted. “So again it’s up to the manager who he picks and who he plays.

“Simon’s training, he’s available and we’ve got him for eighteen months. We’re paying his wages. It would be foolish not to [include him].

“The manager will make a decision whether he involves him at Telford. He’s trained well and is a good footballer.

“I don’t care what anybody says, Simon Heslop is a good footballer who is more than good enough to play at Conference North [level].”

Meanwhile, Penney believes that York’s current squad is overall stronger than that which started the campaign despite its limitation in terms of numbers.

“What we’re finding now is that before, certainly from where I’m looking from the outside, the eleven picked itself,” he continued. “I’ve said that many times.

“Whether they were having a bad game or a poor game, you weren’t going to leave Hamza Bencherif or Danny Parslow out for Jass Sukar. So whether they are playing well or not, they are going to play.

“What we have done now is got a stronger squad and if you don’t play well you don’t stay in the team. You come out, it’s as simple as that.”
