Manager Martin Gray was grateful for an improved second-half display as York City shared a 1-1 draw with Chorley at Bootham Crescent.

The visitors had taken an early lead through Alex Newby despite strong suspicions of a foul on Alex Pattison, who immediately had to be withdrawn due to a recurrence of his ankle injury.

But substitute Connor Smith deservedly levelled with eighteen minutes remaining, although there were strong offside claims, as the hosts move up to fourth in the table.

“We didn’t start as well as we’d liked to have done,” Gray admitted to BBC Radio York. “The previous two home games against Boston and Southport, I thought we started very well and took the lead in both games.

“You want to continue that form and mentality and we asked for that. We got them in at half-time and said they had to use and keep the ball better – and get it wider quicker.

“And I certainly thought we counterattacked down the left-hand side very well during the second-half,” he added. “The energy from all three substitutes and how they used the ball was good.

“The goal was a great ball across from [David] Ferguson, and I’m delighted for young Connor Smith because he’s been so frustrated waiting for his opportunity. He so wants to do well and it was a well-deserved point.”
