York City have announced their first signing of the summer as former captain Russell Penn.

The 32-year-old arrives having made 51 appearances for National League outfit Gateshead last season.

Midfield enforcer Penn completed 109 games while scoring five goals during his first spell at Bootham Crescent, until turning down a new contract and instead moving to League Two outfit Carlisle United in May 2016.

But having managed only a couple of appearances for the Cumbrians, he went on to join non-league Gateshead on loan before switching permanently to Wrexham in January 2017.

Having featured sixteen times for the North Wales club, Penn then moved back to Gateshead on a one-year deal the following May, apparently for family reasons.

Born in Dudley, West Midlands, his earlier career included spells with Kidderminster Harriers, Burton Albion and Cheltenham Town.

He also collected eight England ‘C’ caps while on his way to totalling around 600 senior career games and scoring over 40 goals.
