Two more goals from leading scorer Richard Brodie and a late third from substitute Michael Gash moved York City back into fourth place in the table.

Brodie struck five minutes from the end of a poor first-half after his shot from the edge of the area was parried by Barrow goalkeeper Tim Deasy at the expense of a corner. Although Chris Carruthers’ initial delivery was partially cleared, he immediately received the ball back and crossed for Brodie to head home.

The visitors had earlier had plenty of possession and Andy Bond forced a routine save from Michael Ingham before both Paul Jones and Carlos Logan cleared the target.

Barrow striker Nick Chadwick also threatened with a couple of headers after the break, while there was a massed flare-up in front of the dugouts just beyond the hour that witnessed five bookings – including James Meredith, Michael Rankine and Levi Mackin from York – after both sets of players were involved in an angry confrontation.

But once the action resumed it was home midfielder Alex Lawless having a sidefooted attempt parried by Deasy before delivering a corner that was headed in by Brodie with seven minutes remaining.

The Minstermen then added a third in the final minute when substitute Gash showed his finishing skills with a firm right-footed drive.

And the lively Gash twice went close to another during an extended five minutes of added time, when his deft chip first narrowly cleared the target before he then thumped another effort directly at the keeper.
