Former York City left-back Alex Whittle has been released by recent Football League newcomers Forest Green Rovers.

The 25-year-old Liverpool-born defender managed just three appearances for Rovers since leaving Bootham Crescent in December – and was later sent out on loan to National League North outfit Southport, actually going on to feature against the Minstermen in March.

Whittle had earlier completed 68 appearances for York following earlier spells with AFC Fylde and, north of the border, Dunfermline Athletic.

Meanwhile, Keanu Marsh-Brown, Omar Bugiel, Callum Evans, Mark Roberts, Sam Russell, Harry Pickering, Tom Anderson, Jon Moran, Olly Mehew, Cameron Belford and Jordan Morris are others departing Forest Green after a difficult introductory campaign at the New Lawn.
