Peter Till’s third goal of the season earned York City a well-deserved 1-1 draw at Wrexham after Andy Morrell had given the home side an early lead on six minutes. The former Walsall winger skipped past his marker thirteen minutes later and drove superbly across goalkeeper Scott Shearer to equalise from the edge of the area.

Front duo Michael Gash and Michael Rankine both then proceeded to hit the woodwork as the visitors continued to search for a victory, while veteran ex-Chelsea defender Frank Sinclair headed wide from Wrexham’s best opportunity.

The Minstermen earlier handed a full debut to Duane Courtney after Djoumin Sangare was ruled out. Daniel Parslow moved across into his more familiar central defensive role, with last week’s goal hero Leon Constantine again being restricted to the substitutes bench alongside youngster Tom Richardson.

But York were immediately forced into playing catch-up in the sixth minute when veteran striker Andy Morrell was found six-yards out and calmly slotted in an inviting Jay Harris cross after a defensive slip by Parslow.

However, excellent covering from Parslow on nineteen minutes denied the waiting Morrell a second after almost being set up by ex-York forward Kevin Gall. The visitors immediately broke towards the opposite end, where Till tricked his way past an opponent and lashed superbly into the bottom left-hand corner for his second goal in successive games.

Defensive uncertainty between Parslow and goalkeeper Michael Ingham then almost allowed Harris to take advantage a couple of minutes later, while a Dean Keates corner also had to be scrambled away following more hesitation in the visitors area.

York midfielder Jonathan Smith replied with a curled right-footed attempt into the clutches of Shearer before neat approach work between the former Forest Green Rovers midfielder and James Meredith allowed Alex Lawless to drive over from distance.

Wrexham missed a great chance just after the half-hour when veteran centre-back Sinclair headed narrowly wide from the second of two dangerous Keates corners.

But their keeper Shearer then had to turn over a Smith effort after Rankine had helped on Courtney’s long throw before a fine move from the visitors ended with Neil Barrett turning and drilling a right-footed shot straight at Shearer after Till had squared across.

Five minutes before the break York striker Gash began to celebrate after stabbing the ball past Shearer from another great move, only for his effort to find the inside of the left-hand post. Former York midfielder Christian Smith also had a 28-yard attempt diverted wide by Ingham in the final action of the opening half.

The Minstermen continued to press forward and enjoy most of the possession following the break, despite Smith sending an early header at ex-Wrexham keeper Ingham. And after Rankine had sliced a left-footed shot behind when sweeping past the challenge of Chris Blackburn, the same player once more escaped the former Morecambe defender and struck the outside of the near post from a narrow angle.

Wrexham responded from an increasingly rare forward movement with Harris forcing Ingham into action from distance before the travelling fans were soon demanding a penalty following an alleged shove on Rankine inside the area.

With ten minutes remaining another frantic scramble in the home box ended with Barrett attempting an ambitious overhead and Harris blocking on the line before Till’s shot flashed wide of the far post with Barrett in close attendance four minutes later.

York keeper Ingham was then called upon to spread himself during the three minutes of added time after substitute Jamie Tolley threatened an undeserved late winner for the home side.
